The Nature of Being is a full-scale complete replica of the artist’s skeletal system generated from MRI, CT, CBCT, and EOS scans of his body in 2016. Ferguson collaborated with medical teams in the University of Michigan Health System, EOS imaging in Chicago; his personal dentist; and SIMULIA in the UK/US to learn medical segmentation software and extract and 3D print all 206 bones from a variety of medical scans. He printed every bone himself on a variety of 3D printers, some of which he built himself from raw materials.
